OKX Funding vs Trading Account: Why Your Deposit Shows Insufficient Balance

Checked July 13, 2026. Account structure and labels may shift with app versions; the in-app display takes precedence.

"My deposit arrived - why does the order form say insufficient balance?" This is probably the single most common beginner question on OKX. The answer, almost every time: the coins are in the Funding account, while orders draw from the Trading account. Understand the split once, and deposits, trades, and withdrawals stop being confusing.

What each account does

Funding account Trading account
Role The "front door" for money in and out The "workbench" for trading
Receives deposits ✅ by default ❌
Sources withdrawals ✅ ❌
Spot/derivatives orders ❌ ✅
Earn-type products some subscribe from here depends on the product

Mnemonic: money enters and leaves through Funding; buying and selling happens in Trading - and "Transfer" is the trolley between them.

How to transfer

  1. Open the Assets page and tap Transfer;
  2. Direction: Funding → Trading (reverse it before withdrawing);
  3. Pick the coin, enter the amount (or tap Max);
  4. Confirm.

Transfers are internal bookkeeping: free, instant, unlimited. Nothing touches the blockchain, so there are no fees and no wrong-network risk.

The five classic beginner questions

1. Deposit arrived but the trading page shows nothing? Check the asset overview - the coins are in Funding. Transfer them and trade.

2. Withdrawal page shows zero balance? Reverse direction: move coins from Trading back to Funding first. Full steps in the withdrawal guide.

3. Does transferring affect my positions? Spot balances move freely, but assets serving as margin for open derivatives positions cannot be pulled out at will - the transferable amount shown on the page is authoritative.

4. Sending to a friend on OKX? Use internal transfer instead - no on-chain fee; see the internal transfer guide.

5. Is there a transfer fee? No. Anyone claiming you must "pay a fee or deposit to unlock a transfer" is running a scam - see the fake support playbook.

One habit worth keeping

Park the bulk of your assets in Funding and move only what you intend to trade. A mistake on the trading side then has a bounded blast radius, and withdrawals need one less step.

FAQ

Q: Do both accounts count toward my total assets? Yes - the overview merges them; only the function differs.

Q: Is there a minimum transfer amount? Practically no; follow the on-page prompt.

Q: Why split accounts at all? Separating custody flows from trading flows is standard exchange design for accounting and risk isolation - Binance has an equivalent structure; see the beginner comparison.
